- My understanding of leadership has evolved significantly from the time I first entered the program to where I am right now. Before this program I believed that leadership simply meant being in charge. This has changed because I now know that there are many qualities and aspect that make someone an effective leader and it is not just about power. I now think that leadership is someone that can collectively motivate a group to achieve something. It is not just reflective off of one individual, I believe it is reflected based upon what one individual motivates a group to do and how they motivate a group. - My leadership style is based upon the group I'm working with. I believe that I thrive when I am working in a group, which is where my natural leadership qualities tend to come out more and thrive. Based on what we learned in class I believe that I am a situational leader. A situational leader is a leader who adjusts their actions based on the situation. Situations typically influence the purpose and direction. I believe this is the style of leadership I posess because I always make sure that I know the people I'm wokring with and the environment I'm working with to determine how I can apply my leadership skills.
I chose to upload this position paper from my social psychology class because I believe that Public Leadership gave me the knowledge to choose a topic for this class that I felt strongly about. As a leader, I believe that it is important to discuss topics that you feel you are passionate about. When someone is passionate about something, it is easier for them to perform effectively.
I chose this leadership philosophy paper because I loved how this class gave me the opportunity to pick a leader and write about their philosophies of leadership. It was interesting to take a leader that I've admired for 13 years and apply what I have learned in Public Leadership, such as leadership style and good leadership qualities, to that leader.
I chose my final paper for CPPL200 as another peice of evidence because it includes a personal experience that I believe Public Leadership helped me with. When choosing an issue that I, as a leader, would like to change, I realized that I already had shown leadership skills in a situation that I was placed in, which made me more passionate about wanting to change a certain issue. I think PL has helped give me confidence in making a change and also perfroming effectively as a leader.
- A personal interaction I had where I applied a leadership element from PL was when I was a hostess at a restaurant over the summer and I encountered an issue involving sexual harassment. I showed leadership in this situation, after talking to other female coworkers, by deciding that we should all go to our manager and report what had been happening. I believe that this was a crucial leadership element I learned because it created change in my work environment for me and my other female coworkers. This experience also helped me realize that I do possess effective leadership especially when working with groups, which I was already getting the feelfor throughout the Public Leadership program.
